Kanas Nature Reserve is a larger scenic area that includes Kanas Lake, Kanas River, the famous Three Bends area, and Hemu Village (to be detailed below). Here is the Kanas Lake Map for your visit to the Kanas scenic area.

Three Bays of Kanas River (三湾)- Core of Kanas Lake Scenic Area

The Three Bays are the most iconic and scenic spots in Kanas National Geopark. They're basically these super cool bends in the Kanas River, and from north to south, they are Fairy Bay, Moon Bay, and Wolong Bay.

Fairy Bay (神仙湾)

Fairy Bay (神仙湾) is like a dreamy, foggy wonderland. It's super peaceful and the best time to go is early in the morning to admire its ethereal mist and serene beauty. Fairy Bay is at its most magical during the autumn mornings. The crystal-clear blue waters and the vibrant forest are shrouded in a soft mist, creating a dreamlike landscape that seems almost too beautiful to be real. It's no wonder they call it Fairy Bay; it's truly a heavenly sight that you won't find anywhere else on Earth.

Moon Bay (月亮湾)

Moon Bay (月亮湾) is hands down the prettiest bay in Kanas. It's shaped like a crescent moon, and the water reflects the colorful forests and mountains around it. It's totally magical! In summer, Moon Bay offers a serene escape with its emerald-green lake and deep green forests. But it's autumn that truly steals the show when the lake turns a vibrant blue and the surrounding mountains and forests burst into a kaleidoscope of colors. The misty mornings add an extra layer of enchantment.

Wolong Bay (卧龙湾)

Wolong Bay (卧龙湾) is a sandy area in the river that looks like a giant dragon hidden there - that's how it got its name. From the upper viewing platform, you can marvel at the lifelike dragon sculpted by the calm river and the lush forests that hug the shore. The colors of the dragon, river, trees, and surrounding mountains shift and change with the seasons.

You can take a bus directly to the viewing platforms for all three bays. The road follows the winding river, and there are also wooden walkways for you to walk along the riverbank.

Hiking Trails along the Kanas River

Hiking the Three Bays trail is another super popular thing to do in Kanas. It starts at Fairy Bay and ends at Wolong Bay, and it's about a 4.5 km one-way hike that takes around 1.5 hours. You can take a bus from the visitor center to Fairy Bay to start your hike and then take another bus back from Wolong Bay when you're done.

As you hike, you'll get to see the crystal-clear waters of the Kanas River and the amazing primeval forests on both sides. The best time to do this hike is in the fall, from late September to October. The weather's perfect and the leaves change color, making the scenery even more stunning.

Kanas Lake (喀纳斯湖) - One of the Most Beautiful Lakes in Xinjiang

Kanas Lake is a long, narrow lake stretching from north to south, which looks more like a wide river from a distance. Known for its stunning turquoise waters and changing colors, this lake is the centerpiece of the area and offers serene views and opportunities for exploration. Lush forests, snow-capped mountains, and picturesque villages surround it.

Legend of "Kanas Lake Monster"

Kanas Lake is also famous for the mysterious legend of the "Kanas Lake Monster." Referred to as the "Kanas Lake Monster" or the "Chinese Nessie," it is a creature that is said to inhabit the deep waters of the lake. The legend of the Kanas Lake Monster has added an element of intrigue and mystique to the already enchanting lake, attracting curious visitors and cryptozoologists hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive creature.

Descriptions of the Kanas Lake Monster vary, but it is often described as a large, serpent-like creature with dark scales and a long neck. Witnesses claim to have seen it gliding through the waters or emerging briefly before disappearing beneath the surface. Some accounts compare it to the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland, hence the nickname.

Hiking trails along Kanas Lake

On the eastern shore of Kanas Lake, there is a famous trail called the Taiga Forest Corridor (泰加林廓道). It's an 8-kilometer round-trip boardwalk along the lake, starting at the southern end of Kanas Lake and ending at the Turuk Rock Painting (吐鲁克岩画). Walking along the forest path, you can see the shimmering waters of Kanas Lake, and towering ancient trees, breathe fresh air, encounter cute squirrels, and fully enjoy the serene nature without the crowds.

Boat tour on Kanas Lake

Kanas Lake offers boat tours for 120 yuan, lasting 50 minutes. Departing from the southern end of the lake, the boat takes you deeper into the central part of Kanas Lake, allowing you to explore hidden gems inaccessible by foot. The vessel is a double-decker yacht, relatively small and capable of accommodating up to 50 passengers. During peak season (June to September), the boating experience might be slightly crowded.

Drifting Tour along Kanas River

If you find boat rides boring, why not try rafting on the Kanas River? The Kanas Lake rafting actually starts from the southern end of Kanas Lake (near the boat boarding point) and flows south into the Kanas River. The rafting is about 5 kilometers long and takes around 40 minutes, costing 280 yuan per person. The experience is thrilling, with some sections requiring manual paddling. Two professional guides lead a maximum of eight tourists on this adventure. Along the way, you can enjoy the stunning blue waters and pristine forests. Note that the water in Kanas Lake comes from glacial sources, so it’s quite cold; it's advisable to avoid rafting outside of summer.

Guanyu Pavilion (Fish Viewing Pavilion 观鱼台) - Panoramic View of Kanas Lake

The Guanyu Pavilion is the best observation deck for getting a bird's eye view of Kanas Lake. It's located on a mountain about 600 meters above the lake's southwest shore. People say it was built to spot the mysterious Kanas Lake Monster, but now it's a must-visit place in the Kanas National Geopark.

To get to the top, you'll have to climb 1068 wooden steps after getting off the bus. It's quite a workout! The whole climb takes about an hour, and you'll have to walk back down when you're done.

Once you reach the top, you'll be blown away by the stunning panoramic views of Kanas Lake. It's definitely worth the climb! From up there, you can see the lake stretch out into the valley, surrounded by lush forests and snow-capped mountains in the distance. It's a sight you won't forget.

Hemu Village (禾木村) - Most Beautiful Traditional Tuwa Village

Hemu Village is a traditional village inhabited by the Tuvan people, offering a glimpse into local culture and picturesque wooden houses set amidst beautiful natural scenery along the Hemu River. Known for its stunning natural beauty, especially during autumn when the surrounding birch forests turn golden, Hemu Village is a popular destination for nature lovers and photographers.
