If you glance at a map of China, Lijiang sits in the northwest of Yunnan Province, a region known for dramatic mountains, ethnic culture, and some of the most scenic landscapes in the country.
It lies at the edge of the Hengduan Mountains, where the terrain starts rising toward the Tibetan Plateau. That’s why Lijiang feels cooler, fresher, and more “mountain-like” compared to other parts of China.

1. Old Town Area (Dayan Old Town)
At the heart of Lijiang is the famous Lijiang Old Town (Dayan). This is where most travelers start. Expect stone-paved streets, canals, wooden houses, and a lively mix of cafés, shops, and bars. It’s beautiful—but also the busiest area.
Best for: first-time visitors, sightseeing, nightlife, convenience
2. Shuhe & Baisha Ancient Town Area
About 6 km northwest of the old town, Shuhe Ancient Town offers a quieter, more relaxed vibe. It feels similar to Dayan but with fewer crowds, more space, and a slower pace—great if you want charm without chaos.
Further north, Baisha Village is the oldest settlement in the region and the former capital of the Naxi Kingdom. It’s much more local and low-key, known for traditional culture and the famous Baisha murals.
Best for: relaxing stays, culture lovers, photography, off-the-beaten-path vibes
- Closer to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain → better snow mountain views. Great area for scenic stays.
- Commercial vibe: Lijiang Old Town > Shuhe Ancient Town > Baisha Village → Baisha is the most peaceful.
- Countryside nearby → horse riding & outdoor fun available.
- Smaller size → easier walking, more relaxed than Lijiang Old Town.
3. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Area
To the north of the city lies the iconic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the ultimate natural highlight. This area includes glaciers, alpine meadows, and viewpoints at high altitude. Most travelers visit as a day trip from Lijiang.
Best for: nature, snow scenery, dramatic landscapes

South of the old town is the newer part of Lijiang, with wider roads, shopping areas, and local neighborhoods. It’s less touristy and more practical—where you’ll find train stations, bigger hotels, and daily life.

5. Lashihai Area (Wetland & Horse Riding)
To the west, Lashihai Lake offers a totally different landscape—wetlands, birds, and open countryside. It’s a popular spot for horse riding and light outdoor activities.
Best for: half-day trips, nature, a break from the crowds
- Lijiang Sanyi International Airport – Located south of downtown, about 30–40 minutes from the Old Town.
- Lijiang Railway Station – Also in the southern new town area, about 15–20 minutes to the Old Town. Bullet Train connect with Shangri-la, Dali, and Kunming.

- Tiger Leaping Gorge can be a day trip for viewpoints, but hiking takes 2–3 days (moderate difficulty, not for beginners).
