No.1: The Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses (World Wonder & UNESCO Site)
The Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an are undoubtedly one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries in the world, and a visit to the Terracotta Warriors Museum is a must for any traveler to China. Located 40km northeast of downtown Xian, the Terracotta Warriors are easily accessible from the city. This world-class facility houses over 8,000 life-size statues that were buried with China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, in 210 BCE, and offers travelers a wealth of information about the history and significance of the site.
Discovered in 1974 by local farmers digging a well, the Terracotta Warriors have since become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China's most popular tourist attractions. Spread across three large pits, each warrior is unique, with different facial expressions, hairstyles, and clothing. The level of detail and craftsmanship is astounding, and it is believed that each warrior was made by a different artisan.
How to Visit Terracotta Warriors - Pit One, Two and Three?
When planning a visit to the Terracotta Warriors, it's important to allow enough time to explore each of the three pits. Our Recommended Visiting Route is Pit 1 - Pit 3 - Pit 2 - Exhibition Hall. It usually takes about half day.
Pit One is the largest and most impressive, covering an area of 14,000 square meters and containing the majority of the warriors, as well as horses, chariots, and other artifacts. The warriors in Pit One are arranged in battle formation, with infantry in the front, followed by archers, then chariots and cavalry at the back.
Pit Two covers an area of 6,000 square meters and contains over 1,000 warriors, as well as horses and chariots. The warriors in Pit Two are arranged in a more relaxed formation, with officers and commanders in the front, followed by infantry and archers.
Finally, Pit Three is the smallest of the three pits, covering an area of 520 square meters and containing around 70 warriors, as well as a few horses and chariots. The warriors in Pit Three are arranged in a similar formation to those in Pit Two, with officers and commanders in the front.

The temple was constructed in 648 AD in honor of Empress Zhangsun and boasts stunning and intricate architecture, which combines Chinese and Indian styles. The pagoda is the most notable feature of the complex, rising to a height of 64.7 meters with seven stories. The structure is made of brick and wood and features a square-shaped tower divided into three parts: the base, body, and spire.

Mount Huashan, also known as Huashan Mountain, is located approximately 1.5 to 2 hours' drive northeast of Xian city. As one of the Five Great Mountains of China, it holds great significance in Chinese culture. The name "Zhong Hua," meaning "China," is derived from "Hua Shan," emphasizing the importance of this majestic mountain.
Huashan Mountain boasts five distinct peaks - the North Peak, South Peak, East Peak, West Peak, and Middle Peak - each renowned for its treacherous cliffs and dizzying ravines. Among the various trails, the Plank Road in the Sky, located on the South Peak, is considered the most dangerous hiking path in the world, attracting countless daring hikers and trailblazers seeking an adrenaline rush.
For those who prefer a less strenuous experience, cable cars are available at both the North and West Peaks, providing an opportunity to take in the stunning mountain scenery without the demanding hike. Most travelers usually take a one-day round trip from Xian to Mount Huashan. To embark on a classic route, it is recommended to begin at the North Peak, proceed to the East and South Peaks, and then descend from the West Peak. No.7: Xian Museum & Small Goose Pagoda
The Xian Museum, although less popular than the Shaanxi History Museum, is a complex that includes three parts: the museum proper, the Tang-era Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Jianfu Temple historic area, and the museum gardens. The basic exhibition focuses on Xi'an's history as the ancient capital of 13 dynasties, its more than 1,000 years of capital history, and over 3,000 years of urban development. Through numerous city models from the Zhou, Han, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing periods, the museum showcases the historical development of Xi'an's urban development. The Xian Museum has three treasures, including the gilded statue of the Maitreya Buddha, which Dong Qin created in the fourth year of the Sui dynasty (董钦造鎏金弥陀佛像), the jade "gaozu" cup from the Qin dynasty (秦代玉高足杯), and the Tang dynasty Sancai flying horse (唐代三彩腾空马).
The Small Goose Pagoda (小雁塔) is a part of the Xian Museum, located about 4km away from the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. It is a typical example of early Chinese square brick pagodas with multiple eaves. Originally consisting of 15 levels, it now has 13 and stands at a height of 43.4 meters. The pagoda is a beautiful example of Tang Dynasty Buddhist architecture and a symbol of the integration of Buddhism into Han culture in central China. Built during the reign of Emperor Zhongzong of Tang (707-710 AD), the pagoda was constructed to house Buddhist sutras and images brought back from India by the famous monk Yijing. Every morning, the temple rings its bell, which can be heard for several miles around. The clear tone of the bell and the elegant shape of the pagoda create a unique atmosphere in the ancient city. The "Morning Bell Chimes of the Small Goose Pagoda" is renowned as one of the "Eight Great Sights of Guanzhong".
No.8: Hanyangling (Tomb of Emperor Jingdi)
Hanyangling, also known as the Tomb of Emperor Jingdi, is a magnificent burial complex that houses the tomb of Emperor Jing, the fourth ruler of the Western Han dynasty from 157 to 141 BC. Together with his father, Emperor Wen of Han (Liu Heng), he established the first period of monarchic despotism in Chinese history, known as the Wenjing period.
This impressive complex has restored tomb chambers, sacrificial pits, spirit ways, and a museum exhibition showcasing the preserved artifacts. The scale of the tomb offers a glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of the Han dynasty during the 2nd century BC. The jade burial suits, adorned weapons, and intricate carvings found within the tomb chambers bring to life the ancient imperial past of Xian.
The Han terracotta figures, uncovered at the site, are a third of the size of an actual person, standing at approximately 60 centimeters tall. These figures are depicted as armless and naked. Visitors can walk on glass flooring that covers the archaeological site and observe the numerous artifacts beneath their feet.
Hanyangling is a fantastic destination for travelers, especially for those departing on a flight or high-speed train. Plan to spend at least two hours exploring the mausoleum complex and exhibits.
No.9: Xian Drum Tower & Bell Tower
The Xi'an Bell Tower stands proudly at the center of the city, at the crossroads of the four main streets enclosed by the Ming dynasty city walls. It is the most complete and largest bell tower in China. In ancient times, a massive bell was hung at the top of the tower to sound the alarm and signal the time, thus giving it the name "Bell Tower".
Located approximately 200 meters northwest of the Xi'an Bell Tower, the Xi'an Drum Tower is another iconic landmark of the city. It features deep green glazed tiles covering the eaves, and gold-painted decorations and carvings inside the tower. The top of the tower is crowned with a gilded spire. Visitors can climb the stairs inside the tower to reach the top and enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Under the third eaves of the Drum Tower, two hanging plaques can be found - one on the south side reading "a place of literary and martial prosperity", and the other on the north side reading "the sound is heard in heaven". The Drum Tower houses various types of drums from ancient times to the present day.
The Jingyun Bell (a replica) on the Xi'an Bell Tower rings 24 times every day at 9 am, 12 pm, and 3 pm.
