Allocate another 2-3 hours to the Shanxi Museum for a treasure trove of artifacts.

Beyond these main attractions, Taiyuan also offers the ancient county and Shuangta Temple for exploration. These two sites warrant an additional day of your itinerary. Spend 3-4 hours wandering through the ancient county, climbing the city walls for panoramic views, and visiting temples like the City God Temple and Guan Di Temple to delve into ancient architecture and culture. If you're visiting Shanxi, don't limit yourself to Taiyuan. Day 1-2: Datong's must-see attractions are mostly located in the suburbs, such as the exquisitely carved Yungang Grottoes, Yingxian Wooden Pagoda and the Hanging Temple built on a cliff. These two attractions will take up an entire day.

However, it would be a pity to leave Datong so soon. Adding another day to your itinerary is the most cost-effective option. During the day, you can admire the colorful glazed Nine Dragon Wall and enjoy a Liao Dynasty Khitan spiritual journey at Huayan Temple. In the evening, take a stroll around the Datong City Wall.

Day 3-4: Mount Wutai, a sacred Buddhist mountain, extends a warm welcome to all visitors, regardless of their religious beliefs. Here, amidst the ancient temples, you can start a journey of self-discovery. With its attractions spread across five distinct peaks, it's advisable to allocate two days to fully immerse yourself in the spiritual ambiance of temples like Tayuan Temple, Shuxiang Temple, Xiantong Temple, and Pusading Temple. To fuel your exploration, don't miss the opportunity to savor the delectable vegetarian noodles offered at these temples.

Day 5-6: You could spend the last two days relaxing in Taiyuan and Pingyao. Jinci Temple, a royal sacrificial garden, and Pingyao Ancient City, one of China's best-preserved ancient cities, are must-sees. Both are linked to ancient dynasties and official life, spending a day exploring them.

For a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people, you can visit Zhangbi Ancient Castle on your last travel day to explore the underground tunnels where people hid during wars, and Wang's Family Compound to see the luxurious lifestyle of the wealthy.
