Pingyao Ancient City is located in Pingyao County, Shanxi Province. Pingyao County belongs to Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province, and is situated in the central part of Shanxi Province and the southwestern part of Jinzhong City. Pingyao is located around 37 degrees north latitude, the same latitude as Bordeaux, France.
Pingyao County borders different counties and cities: Qixian County to the east, Fenyang City to the west, Changzhi City to the south, Lüliang City to the north, and Jiexiu City to the southwest.
In terms of distance, Pingyao County is about 94 kilometers from the provincial capital, Taiyuan, making it one of the closest among nearby large cities. As for cities outside the province, Pingyao is approximately 543 kilometers from the ancient capital, Xian. Compared to other more distant provincial cities, such as Beijing (616 km), Tianjin (758 km), and Guangzhou (2390 km), Pingyao is relatively closer to Xian among the major cities outside the province.

- Rishengchang Former Bank (日升昌票号): Located on Xida Street within the ancient city, Rishengchang Exchange, founded in the 19th century, has been hailed as China's ancient Wall Street and is considered the cradle of Chinese banking. The attraction showcases the primary operations of ancient banks, where countless digital files are replaced by antique abacuses and stacks of ledgers. - Pingyao Ancient City Wall (平遥古城墙): For a bird's eye view of Pingyao, climb the ancient city wall. Pingyao has two railway stations:
- Pingyaogucheng Railway Station (平遥古城站):
Location: Wenjing Avenue, Pingyao, Jinzhong, Shanxi, China.
Transportation: This is the newly built high-speed railway station in Pingyao. From Pingyao Ancient City Station, you can take high-speed trains to Beijing, Xian, Taiyuan, Qingdao, Datong, Chongqing, and other destinations.
- Pingyao Railway Station (平遥站):
Location: No. 14, Zhongdu Road, Pingyao County, Jinzhong City, Shanxi, China.
Transportation: Pingyao Station mainly serves conventional trains, which take longer to reach their destinations compared to high-speed trains. From Pingyao Station, you can travel to cities like Datong, Taiyuan, Yuncheng, Beijing, and Shenzhen.

Pingyao to Xian Map
Xian is located northwest of Pingyao. The straight-line distance between the two cities is approximately 500 kilometers. It takes less than 3.5 hours to travel from Pingyao to Xian by high-speed train, or 9-12 hours by regular train.

Beijing is located northeast of Pingyao. The straight-line distance between the two cities is approximately 476 kilometers. A high-speed train journey from Pingyao to Beijing takes less than 4 hours, while a conventional train journey takes between 9 and 12 hours.

Spend 2 Days in Pingyao:
One day is generally allocated to exploring Pingyao Ancient City, which covers an area of 1260 square kilometers. A day is nearly over just by visiting important attractions such as the Rishengchang Former Bank, Pingyao Ancient Government Office, Temple of City God, and Pingyao Ancient City Wall.
Besides the ancient city, not far away are the Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple, which were listed as World Heritage Sites along with Pingyao Ancient City. The statues in the temples are breathtaking and were even used as a filming location for the game Black Myth: Wukong. The temples are not very large, so you can choose whether or not to visit them.
Not far from Pingyao are two other residential attractions: Zhangbi Ancient Castle and Wang's Family Compound, which require an additional day to visit. At Zhangbi Ancient Castle, you can marvel at the 10-kilometer underground tunnel that was once used for military purposes. Then, stroll through Wang's Family Compound and visit the magnificent mansion, known as the "Forbidden City of the Common People," which belonged to a Shanxi merchant whose influence once rivaled that of Italian merchants.
