On February 2, 2025, as the morning light of Florence began to spread across the Arno River, 76-year-old Nardelli Sergio and 71-year-old Zammuto Ilma, with their suitcases in tow, began their long-awaited journey to the East.
This childhood sweetheart couple, who became fascinated with Eastern culture after retirement, were finally about to explore the Silk Road and Tibetan civilization they had dreamed of.
Time had nurtured their spirit, and I scrolled through their vibrant departure photos on WhatsApp.

When choosing Asia Odyssey Travel's "15-Day Classic China Tour," these thrifty seniors carefully scrutinized every quote. With a budget of 3,000 euros per person, they wanted to cover all their dreams, from the Great Wall and Terracotta Warriors to pandas and Everest Base Camp. Our "full-time tour guide service" and "senior-friendly" approach clearly won them over.
At the end of the confirmation email, Sergio specifically noted in red font: "Please ensure the tour guide speaks clear English, as my wife's hearing is not very good."
However, reality is always more dramatic than planned.
Hearing Impairment? Online Cultural Explanations
Although the travel agency arranged a tour guide with a great command of English, during the actual trip, due to Mr. and Mrs. Nardelli's slight hearing impairment and limited understanding of complex English, they struggled to grasp the cultural explanations.
At the Terracotta Warriors Museum in Xi'an, when the tour guide was rapidly explaining "Qin Shi Huang's unification of the six states," Ilma's expression was one of bewildered confusion.
I will never forget the tour guide's description of Ilma's expression and actions. She stood in front of Pit 1, her gaze moving blankly between the terracotta figures and the guide, finally shaking her head in resignation.
How could we allow them to have such a confused travel experience after coming from so far? At that moment, as their dedicated travel consultant, I decided to become their "third ear"!

Thus began a day-long online language explanation. During the day, I asked all guides to speak at a "sloth-like pace" and simplify professional terms. At night, I translated their questions, such as "The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was built in 652 AD," into Italian using Google Translate. I broke these sentences into short phrases and sent them to them with pictures.
My translation and explanation continued until the last stop in Tibet. When they didn't understand the guide's explanation of the Tibetan painting of a ladder, I quickly researched and explained online that there are five types of burials in Tibetan culture: sky burial (the highest ritual), water burial, cremation, earth burial, and stupa burial.
These different burial methods are determined by the deceased's economic and social status. The ladder they saw was painted for the deceased after a water burial, symbolizing the deceased's ascent to heaven. This ladder originally had two meanings: one was to allow the soul of the deceased to climb the ladder to heaven, and the other was for good luck. The white ladder is a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism, and if designed, your luck will improve.
Finally, she understood the Tibetan Buddhist view of life and death. Mr. and Mrs. Nardelli's eyes were filled with tears after hearing the explanation.
Hotel System Bug "Forgets" the Reservation
The hotel mishap in Chengdu was a bit of shock. When the system displayed "room reservation does not exist," the two seniors stood in the lobby like lost children, unable to communicate with the front desk due to the language barrier.
I urgently called our hotel liaison, retrieved the electronic contract within 10 minutes, and prioritized a quiet room facing away from the street due to Mr. Nardelli's mild insomnia. They were checked in within 20 minutes.
When Ilma sent a room selfie on WeChat, the warm bedside lamp in the background illuminated their relieved smiles.
Continue Traveling in Tibet Despite Altitude Sickness
The harrowing night in Lhasa truly tested us. Due to a misunderstanding of the English instructions, Mr. Nardelli took a shower upon arrival, despite the rule of no showers for the first three days at high altitude. His altitude sickness came suddenly, and his blood oxygen level dropped to 82%, causing everyone to worry.
The guide rushed into the hotel with an oxygen cylinder and accompanied them to the hospital, where they received treatment until 10 PM, and asked if they wanted to end their Tibet trip, emphasizing the importance of their health.
To our admiration, the 76-year-old's first words after the IV were: "I want to continue the trip. This may be my first and last time, and I don't want to miss any of Tibet's scenery."

Throughout the rest of their Tibet tour, I checked on his health daily via WeChat and asked the guide to take extra care. The guide arranged for him to sit in the front row of the vehicle to monitor his condition.
After their return, Zammuto Ilma, who is not very proficient with the internet, repeatedly expressed her gratitude for the warm service and attentive care from all our staff (including guides and drivers) throughout the trip. What moved me the most was when Ilma said, "Next time we go to Bhutan, we'll look for you again!"
I am already looking forward to our reunion!
