21 Must-Visit Places in Chengdu (& Top Attractions for First-Timers)

Written by Senior Expert Celine Schneider|Updated: 2025-10-31

You've probably seen endless lists of Chengdu attractions and are wondering what to do in Chengdu first. I get it.

It's genuinely one of my favorite places on Earth because it's one of the few places where you can feel both incredibly "lazy" and intensely "fiery" all at the same time.

It's the home of "slow living" teahouses where time seems to stop, but also the birthplace of fiery, numbing hotpot that jolts you to life.

This is my "Local's Picks" guide to the 21 must-visit places in Chengdu, built specifically for first-timers. I'm going to walk you through all the top attractions, from the non-negotiable icons (like the pandas) to the local secrets (like the right teahouse).

These are the essential things to do in Chengdu to truly understand its soul. Let's explore the city together.

Visa-free Travel to China:

Starting December 2024, transit travelers from 54 countries can stay for up to 10 days without a visa. Better yet, visitors from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and several Asian countries enjoy 30-day visa-free stays through 2025.

US, UK, and Canadian passport holders can visit for 6 days visa-free. Learn more details about How to Visit China Without a Visa in 2025>>

The Top 3 Must-Visit Places in Chengdu: The "Non-Negotiable" Icons

If you only have a few days, these are the three experiences that are non-negotiable. They are the absolute heart and soul of Chengdu.

1. See the Giant Pandas (at the Chengdu Panda Base)

Visit Time: 0.5-2 days

Ticket Price: 55-95RMB per person

Locations: Chengdu Panda Base, Dujiangyan Panda Base, Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve

Let's get this one out of the way: yes, you must see the pandas. And the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) is the best place in the city to do it.

This isn't a sad zoo. It's a massive, sprawling park of open-air enclosures where the pandas are the stars. You'll get to see them climbing trees, rolling around, and—most famously—lounging in big piles while blissfully chewing bamboo.

This is the most important advice I can give you: GO EARLY. I mean, be at the gate right when they open (usually 7:30 AM). The pandas are most active and playful in the morning during their 8:00 AM feeding time.

By 10:30 AM, especially in summer, they all find a comfortable spot and fall asleep. An early start is the difference between an unforgettable experience and staring at a furry, sleeping log.

2. Wander the "Ancient" Alleys (Jinli & Kuanzhai)

Chengdu has two famous "ancient" streets: Kuanzhai Alleys (宽窄巷子) and Jinli Ancient Street (锦里). They are both restored, pedestrian-only areas, but they have very different vibes.

Kuanzhai is more polished and upscale, a beautiful blend of traditional Sichuanese courtyards housing modern, high-end teahouses and boutiques. Jinli feels more like a "living" street market—it's bustling, full of food stalls, and incredibly atmospheric.

My advice is to visit Kuanzhai Alleys in the daytime to appreciate the architecture, but save Jinli for the evening. After the sun sets, hundreds of traditional red lanterns light up, reflecting off the stone paths and wooden buildings.

The feeling is pure magic. As your "guide friend," however, I must warn you: I do not recommend eating here. The snacks in both alleys are often expensive and not the best quality. Come for the incredible sights and photos, then go to a real local area (like Fuqin or Yulin) for dinner.

3. "Waste" an Afternoon at People's Park (人民公园)

Ticket Price: Free

Address: Renmin South Road Section 2, Chengdu

This is my favorite "must-do," and it truly captures the soul of Chengdu's famous "slow life." People's Park is a large, central park, but you're not here to see the park itself. You are here to visit the Heming Teahouse (鹤鸣茶社).

Find a seat in the sprawling courtyard of bamboo chairs, order a simple cup of jasmine tea (which they'll refill with hot water all afternoon for one price), and just... stop. Watch the locals play cards, chat, and relax.

This is non-negotiable. While you're sitting there, you will be approached by men with long, metal tools. These are the famous "ear cleaners" (Shu Er - 舒耳). Don't be shy. Say yes. It's a bizarre, tingling, strangely satisfying experience that is 100% Chengdu.

You are now in a UNESCO-designated "City of Gastronomy." In Chengdu, food is the main event.

4. Brave a Real Sichuan Hotpot (Huo Guo)

You cannot leave Chengdu without trying a true Sichuan Hotpot. A bubbling, fiery pot of broth is placed in the center of your table, filled with dozens of chili peppers and the all-important Sichuan peppercorns, which give the food its unique "numbing" (ma) sensation.

You then cook paper-thin slices of meat, fresh vegetables, and all sorts of other goodies in the broth.

If you're not a hero, ask for a "Yuanyang Pot" (鸳鸯锅). This is a split pot, with the fiery broth on one side and a mild, mushroom or bone broth on the other. Also, the dipping sauce is key: ask for a small bowl of sesame oil (xiang you) with garlic. It cuts the heat and enhances the flavor.

5. Hunt for Authentic Local Eats (Yulin & Fuqin)

To eat where the locals do, skip the tourist traps and head to the city's neighborhoods. For a true taste of Chengdu life, explore these two areas:

The Yulin Neighborhood (玉林): Made famous across China by the song "Chengdu," Yulin is the perfect example of the city's artistic, slow-life vibe.

It's not a chaotic party zone. Instead, its leafy streets are lined with fantastic, affordable restaurants, small, cozy wine bars (xiao jiu guan), and quiet pubs (qing ba). It's the perfect place for a relaxed dinner and a "slow" evening.

The Fuqin Night Market (抚琴夜市): If you want the "fast and furious" side of Chengdu snacking, this is where you go. This is a genuine local's night market, packed with energy.

Here you'll find stalls grilling everything imaginable, sizzling woks, and all the classic, delicious snacks that locals line up for after work.

6. Explore Authentic Sichuan Cuisine (Chuan Cai)

Sichuan Cuisine

Hotpot is just one part of it. True Sichuan (Chuan) cuisine is a universe of flavors: numbing, spicy, sweet, sour, and nutty. You must try the classics like Mapo Tofu, Kung Pao (Gongbao) Chicken, and Dandan Noodles.

For the best, most authentic food, skip the fancy hotel restaurants and ask your hotel concierge to point you to a "Fly Restaurant" (Cangying Guan - 苍蝇馆子).

These are tiny, often rundown-looking local spots that serve the most incredible, authentic food of your life. For a more hands-on experience, you can even take a cooking class at the Sichuan Cuisine Museum.

Top Historical Sites in Chengdu for Culture Lovers

If you love history, Chengdu is a treasure chest. These Chengdu historical sites were the heart of the ancient Shu Kingdom, and their past is everywhere.

7. Wuhou Shrine (Temple of Marquis Wu) – 武侯祠

Wuhou Temple, built to honor Zhuge Liang

Visit Time: 2-3 hours

Ticket Price: 60RMB per person

Address: No. 231 Wuhou Temple Street, Wuhou District, Chengdu

This is a beautiful, serene temple complex dedicated to the heroes of the Three Kingdoms period (around 220 AD), a massive part of Chinese history and pop culture.

It honors Emperor Liu Bei and his brilliant strategist, Zhuge Liang. You'll wander through quiet halls filled with ancient stone tablets, bonsai gardens, and the smell of incense.

A perfect itinerary is to visit the quiet, contemplative Wuhou Shrine in the late afternoon, and then, as the sun sets, walk straight out of the temple and into the lively, lantern-lit world of Jinli next door (but remember our tip: just look, don't eat!).

8. Du Fu Thatched Cottage (杜甫草堂)

This is a beautiful, sprawling park and museum dedicated to Du Fu, one of China's most revered poets. He lived here in the 8th century in a simple thatched cottage. The site today is a peaceful, literary garden, perfect for a quiet stroll.

A wonderful plan is to explore the cottage grounds and then step right next door into the large and beautiful Huanhuaxi Park (浣花溪公园), which is completely free.

If you found the Heming Teahouse at People's Park too crowded, the teahouses inside Huanhuaxi are a fantastic, much quieter alternative for a relaxing afternoon.

9. Wenshu Monastery (文殊院)

Chengdu Wenshu Monastery

Visiting Time: 1-3 hours

Ticket Price: Free

Address: No. 66 Wenshu Yuan Street, Qingyang District, Chengdu

This is the spiritual heart of the city, a living, breathing Buddhist monastery right in the middle of the bustle. It's the best-preserved temple in Chengdu.

Locals adore this place; it's where students come to pray for academic success (求学业) and where everyone comes to find a moment of inner peace.

The monastery is also famous for its fantastic vegetarian restaurant (素斋) and its profound tea culture. The temple runs a highly selective, year-long tea course.

The graduates you see serving tea have been rigorously trained in the "Wenshu school" of tea art. Some go on to open their own teahouses, spreading this unique, mindful tradition throughout the city.

10. Jinsha Site Museum (金沙遗址博物馆)

This is for the ancient history buffs. In 2001, construction workers stumbled upon a massive archaeological site, revealing the center of the mysterious Shu Kingdom (around 3,000 years ago).

The museum is a stunning, modern building built over the active dig site. The centerpiece is the Golden Sun Bird, an impossibly thin, intricate piece of gold foil that has become the official symbol of the city.

Modern Chengdu: What to Do in the "New" City

In the last decade, Chengdu has exploded with modern art and architecture. Answering what to do in Chengdu must include these new places to visit in Chengdu.

11. Taikoo Li & the IFS Panda Climb (太古里)

Chengdu Taikoo Li

This is the dazzling heart of modern Chengdu. Taikoo Li (太古里) is a stunning outdoor mall that blends luxury brand stores with restored, traditional temple and courtyard architecture (it's built around the historic Daci Temple).

Right next to it is the IFS building, famous for one reason: the giant panda sculpture climbing its wall.

Don't just take a photo from the street! The best spot is on the 7th-floor rooftop garden of the IFS building. You can walk right up to the panda's head and get the perfect selfie.

12. Dongjiao Memory (Eastern Suburb Memory – 东郊记忆)

This is Chengdu's "798 Art District." It's a massive former factory complex that has been converted into an industrial art park. It's full of sculptures, art galleries, cool cafes, and is one of the city's best venues for live music.

Things to Do in Chengdu at Night (Magic, Music & Slow Vibes)

As the sun sets, Chengdu reveals a different kind of energy. This isn't a "party-all-night" city. The top things to do in Chengdu at night are about magic, art, and relaxed socializing.

13. Experience the Magic of Sichuan Opera (川剧变脸)

Sichuan Opera

This is an absolute must-do. You're not just going to see "opera"; you're going to see an incredible cultural performance famous for Biànliǎn (变脸), or "Face-Changing."

Performers, in elaborate, colorful costumes, change their masks in the blink of an eye, a closely guarded secret and a mesmerizing art form. The show is a variety act, often including fire-breathing, acrobats, and shadow puppets. It's a fantastic night out.

14. Have a Drink in a "Slow" Bar (The Yulin Vibe – 玉林)

Chengdu's nightlife isn't about giant, thumping nightclubs. It's about the "slow life" you found in the teahouse, but with cocktails. Head to the Yulin (玉林) neighborhood, which we mentioned in the food section.

After dinner, this is the perfect place to find a cozy, independent xiao jiu guan (small pub) or a quiet bar, listen to some live folk music, and have a real conversation.

15. See the City Lights at Wangping Street (望平街)

If you want a more modern, vibrant scene, this is it. This riverside street has a colorful, almost "Bangkok" vibe. It's known for its bright "I am here" (我在这儿) sign, great views of the TV tower, and a dense collection of hip bars and trendy shops. It's the perfect place for people-watching and feeling the city's new energy.

Epic Day Trips & Nearby Attractions from Chengdu

If you have an extra day or two, you can reach these world-class Chengdu nearby attractions. A quick "guide's warning": some of these can be done in one (very long) day, but for others, I strongly recommend an overnight stay.

16. The Leshan Giant Buddha (乐山大佛) - The Perfect Day Trip

Take Boat Trip to View Leshan Giant Buddha

This is one of the most staggering sights in all of Asia. It is a 71-meter (233 ft) tall Buddha statue that was carved directly into the side of a river cliff in the 8th century. The scale is hard to comprehend until you're standing at its feet.

You have two ways to see it, and I recommend doing both if you have time. First, take the 30-minute boat tour from the dock. The boat will pause in front of the Buddha, and this is the only way to get a full-body photo of the entire statue.

Afterward, hike down the winding, steep cliffside staircase (it can be crowded) to stand at the statue's enormous feet and truly appreciate its scale.

Visiting Time: 0.5-1 day

Ticket Price: 80 RMB

Address: Dujiangyan, Chengdu, Sichuan

This one sounds... boring. An "irrigation system"? Trust me, it's not. The Dujiangyan Irrigation System (都江堰) is a 2,200-year-old engineering marvel that still controls the Min River and prevents Chengdu from flooding.

It's a beautiful, sprawling park of temples, rushing water, and an incredible suspension bridge. It's a masterpiece of ancient wisdom.

This area is also home to the Dujiangyan Panda Base. It's much quieter and more spread out than the main base in Chengdu, offering a more natural, peaceful panda-viewing experience. You can easily combine the irrigation system and this panda base in one perfect day trip.

18. Mount Qingcheng (青城山) - The Taoist Mountain Day Trip

Visiting Time: 0.5-1 day

Ticket Price: 80 RMB

Address: Qingcheng Town, Dujiangyan City, Sichuan Province, China

This is a magical, mist-covered mountain and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is one of the most sacred mountains in Taoism (道教), and you can hike for hours through quiet, ancient temples.

But for many in Asia, it's famous for a legend. If you've heard the famous Chinese love story, The Legend of the White Snake, this is the mythical mountain where the white snake began her spiritual journey to become human. It's a truly special place.

19. Mount Emei (峨眉山) - The 2-Day "Must-Do" Expedition

Visiting Time: 1-3 days

Ticket Price: 185 RMB

Address: Emeishan, Sichuan Province

This is the UNESCO World & Natural Heritage titan. Mount Emei is one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains.

While some tours sell this as a long day trip, as your "guide friend," I strongly advise against it. The mountain is huge. The true magic happens at the Golden Summit (金顶), which is over 3,000 meters (10,000 ft) high.

The essential experience is to take the series of buses and cable cars up, stay overnight on the mountain, and wake up in the freezing cold to watch the sunrise above a sea of clouds.

It is an unforgettable, spiritual moment, standing before the giant, glittering golden statue of Samantabhadra.

Beyond the Day Trip: Multi-Day Tourist Attractions Near Chengdu

This is a "friend's warning": the following tourist attractions in Chengdu's orbit are not day trips, no matter what anyone tells you. They are world-class destinations in their own right and require a separate 3-4 day "mini-trip" from Chengdu.

20. Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong (九寨沟 & 黄龙)

Address: Jiuzhaigou County, Sichuan Province

Jiuzhaigou is China's fairy-tale park, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its dozens of impossibly bright blue and turquoise-colored lakes, all connected by thundering waterfalls.

Huanglong, its neighbor, is known for its golden-yellow travertine (calcium) pools that cascade down a mountainside. This is a domestic flight or a new high-speed train ride from Chengdu, and you need at least 3 days.

21. Mount Siguniang (四姑娘山 - Four Sisters Mountain)

This is "China's Alps." Located west of Chengdu, this is a stunning national park of snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and pristine forests. It's a paradise for hikers.

You'll need at least 3-4 days to travel there, acclimatize to the altitude, and properly explore its beautiful valleys.

Travel Around the Chengdu City

By Metro (Subway) is your best friend. The Chengdu Metro is new, clean, cheap, and has signs and announcements in English. It connects most of the major tourist spots on this list and is the best way to get to/from the train stations.

Travel From Chengdu to Nearby Attractions

Here's my biggest tip for these trips: high-speed rail is the absolute best way to go. You just need to know which station to use.

For Leshan, Mount Emei, and Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong, your starting point is Chengdu East Railway Station (成都东站). This is the main high-speed rail hub with frequent departures to those destinations.

The only exception is Mount Siguniang, which requires a 4-hour private car trip as there is no train service.

To be honest, since organizing that long drive and a reliable car can be a real hassle, this is one trip where booking a package really simplifies things. As Asia Odyssey Travel is a local Chengdu company, we'd be happy to arrange all those details for you.
