Yangtze 1- The Only 5-Star Cruise Ship That Sails Through Xiling Gorge

The Yangtze 1 is a prestigious luxury cruise ship, renowned for offering an exclusive and unparalleled journey along China's iconic Yangtze River. Launched in 2006 and recently refurbished in 2024, this ship combines modern amenities with a rich history of hosting international dignitaries and celebrities. Operated by Changjiang Cruises, the Yangtze 1 is part of China's State Guest Fleet, having served as a venue for high-profile events and welcomed prominent political figures from around the world.

As the only Yangtze River cruise ship capable of passing through both the Three Gorges Dam Ship Lift - the world's largest ship lift - and Gezhouba Dam, the Yangtze 1 offers a truly unique cruising experience. Passengers are treated to sweeping, panoramic views of the Three Gorges, including the extraordinary Xiling Gorge, which is sailed directly through by the Yangtze 1, a feature unavailable on most other vessels.

iconWhy Choose Yangtze 1 Cruise?

  • 1It is the only cruise ship that directly sails through Xiling Gorge, providing passengers with the only chance to see the entire Three Gorges section in its full splendor.
  • 2Due to its smaller size, the Yangtze 1 can access routes and experiences that larger ships cannot, including the direct navigation through both the Three Gorges Dam Ship Lift and Gezhouba Dam.
  • 3In its 2024 renovation, the Yangtze 1 introduced a range of upgraded amenities, dining options, and services, making it more luxurious and comfortable than ever before.
  • 4The Yangtze 1 now offers an all-inclusive package, providing a hassle-free, value-for-money experience. This package covers accommodation, meals, and excursions, making it easier for guests to enjoy their journey without worrying about additional costs or bookings.

Additionally, the Cruise Ships we chose mainly run between Chongqing and Yichang (before Three Gorges Dam) which are part of the calmest water area of the Yangtze River.

Modern Ships: Most Yangtze River cruise ships are modern and built with advanced safety features, including fire detection systems, life rafts, and emergency evacuation procedures.

Trained Crew: Crew members are professionally trained in safety protocols and emergency response. Safety drills are conducted regularly.

Life Jackets & Emergency Equipment: Life jackets are available in all cabins and public areas. Emergency exits and evacuation plans are clearly marked throughout the ship.

Stable Conditions: The river’s calm and predictable flow ensures a smooth and stable journey, even during rainy seasons.

Onboard Clinics: Ships are equipped with basic medical clinics for first aid and minor medical needs.

Medical Staff: There is usually a doctor or trained nurse on board to assist with common ailments like motion sickness, minor injuries, or sudden health concerns.

Limitations: Medical facilities on ships are basic and not equipped for major emergencies or surgeries. Passengers with serious medical conditions should bring their medications and consult their doctor before traveling.

Emergency Support: In case of a severe medical emergency, the ship can arrange for evacuation to the nearest hospital, but this may take time depending on the ship’s location.

Bring Medications: Ensure travelers carry any prescribed medications or health supplies they need for the duration of the trip.

Inform the Cruise Staff: Notify the cruise in advance if any passenger has a specific medical condition or mobility issue.

    3. Small backpack for day trips.
    4. Power adapters (China uses Type A, C, or I plugs).
    5. Bring motion sickness medicine if you’re prone to seasickness (though the river is calm).
    6. Have personal medications handy, as onboard pharmacies may not stock them.
    7. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially during hot weather.
    8. Protect Yourself from the Sun: Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the strong sun.

Amazing Views and Fun Entertainment
I joined the Yangtze 1 for the 5-day cruise from Yichang to Chongqing, and it was worth every penny. The ship itself was smaller than I expected, but it had a cozy, welcoming vibe. The crew put on a performance one night, and it was surprisingly entertaining—everyone joined in for some dancing at the end.

"Great Service and a Unique Journey
Sailing on the Yangtze 1 was such a unique experience! The all-inclusive package was super convenient, with good food and drinks always available. My cabin was smaller than I expected, but it was cozy, and the bathroom was very clean, which is always a priority for me. The cruise through the Three Gorges Dam was unbelievable—I couldn’t believe how close we got to the engineering marvel. The staff were amazing too, always friendly, and their English made communication easy. Booking with Martin from Asia Odyssey Travel made everything stress-free—he even gave me tips for exploring Yichang before boarding.

A Close-Up Experience of the Three Gorges Dam
I booked the Yangtze 1 through Asia Odyssey Travel, and the whole trip was so well-coordinated. Starting in Yichang at Nine Pier, the cruise offered a smooth and scenic journey. One of the highlights was sailing directly through the Three Gorges Dam—watching the locks in action from the deck was fascinating. The cabin wasn’t huge, but it was comfortable, and the bathroom was spotless. The all-inclusive setup was great—no extra costs, which made budgeting easy. And the crew surprised us with a fun performance one evening.
