1. Can Foreigners Travel to Tibet? Are Foreigner Allowed in Tibet?

Yes, you can start planning your Tibet tour right now! Tibet (Xizang) fully reopened for tourism in late 2023, making those old forum posts about "can foreigners visit Tibet" outdated. Now is the perfect time to plan a trip to the foot of Mount Everest and other attractions.

While traveling to Tibet requires additional permit compared to other parts of China, don't worry! We'll guide you through the necessary paperwork step-by-step.

2. Can You Travel to Tibet Independently?

Unfortunately, independent travel in Tibet (Xizang) for foreigners is not permitted. All foreign visitors must join a guided tour organized by a travel agency, such as us - Asia Odyssey Travel. You can even form a private group with your family or friends.

Group travel in Tibet offers significant advantages. Many Tibetan attractions are far apart, requiring long drives. Some areas have limited or no cell service, and English isn't widely spoken. With a professional English-speaking guide, you can confidently navigate these remote regions while learning fascinating facts about Tibetan culture.

3. Documents for Entering Tibet: Visa, Passport, Tibet Travel Permit

To visit Tibet, foreign tourists need a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP), a regular visa and passport.

Note: All foreign tourists and Taiwan residents need to apply for a TTP.

Visa

China just made it easier for some people to visit! If your country is on the "visa free travel to China" list, you can skip the visa application. Otherwise, you'll need an L (tourist) visa. And if you're not coming as a tourist, there are other papers you'll need to bring.

  • Student (X1, X2 Visa): Recommendation letter from School.
  • Business Work Crew Talent (F, Z, C, R Visa): Employment letter from your company or employer.
  • Private Family (S1, S2, Q1, Q2 Visa): Invitation letter from your relatives and and inviter's passport information.
  • Journalist Diplomat (J1, J2 Visa): Apply for Tibet permits through the China Foreign Affairs Office.

Travelers entering Tibet from Kathmandu must secure a group visa from the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.

Passport

Your passport must meet the following requirements:

  • Your passport must have a validity of at least six months.
  • Your passport must have at least one blank visa page.
  • Your passport information must be clear. This includes basic information such as your name, date of birth, and passport number, which cannot be damaged.

Tibet Travel Permit: How to Get Tibet Visa?

Tibet Permit

The Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) can only be applied for by travel agencies authorized by the Tibet Tourism Bureau (like ours). Individual applications are not accepted. You can trust us completely to handle your TTP application. The process is straightforward.

Step 1. Plan Ahead

Applying for a TTP can take up to 2 weeks, and some areas require additional permits. Determine your travel dates and destinations at least 2 months in advance. And the TTP restricts your travel to the specific itinerary you submitted. Any deviation is prohibited.

Step 2. Choose a Licensed Agency

Book your Tibet tour with a travel agency authorized by the Tibet Tourism Bureau, like Asia Odyssey Travel. We'll handle all necessary permits and arrangements.

Step 3. Provide Documents

Simply provide copies of your passport and Chinese visa. We'll take care of the rest.

Step 4. Receive Your Tibet Travel Permit

Once approved, we'll send your permit via email or mail. Bring a physical copy with you to Tibet.

Consult Asia Odyssey Travel for necessary document and other Xizang travel tips.

4. Extra Documents Required for Visiting EBC, Mount Kailash, and Other Areas

Beyond the standard visa, passport, and Tibet Travel Permit (TTP), travelers to certain areas like Mount Everest Base Camp, Mount Kailash, and specific scenic spots in Nyingchi require a Military Permit and an Alien's Travel Permit (PSB Permit).

Relax, we'll take care of everything.

5. Journalists and Diplomats Can Get China Foreign Affairs Office Approval to Visit Tibet

Journalists, diplomats, and embassy officials cannot acquire a Tibet Travel Permit (TTB) in the same manner as ordinary tourists. Their Tibet travel applications must be approved by the China Foreign Affairs Office.

6. Is It Safe to Travel to Tibet?

Tibet is considered one of the safest regions in China, with consistently low crime rates. The local Tibetan people, who are devout Buddhists, are known for their kindness, purity, and friendliness towards foreign visitors. You may be moved by their sincere faith.

While personal safety is well-assured, physical health is another matter. As a high-altitude region, Tibet can pose challenges for those with pre-existing medical conditions due to the risk of altitude sickness.

7. Get to Tibet from Mainland China or Nepal

The only way to enter Tibet, China is via mainland China or Nepal.

Traveling to Tibet from Major Chinese Cities

By Air: Air travel is the quickest way to reach Xizang. Tibet has several airports, with Lhasa Gonggar Airport being the largest and busiest. It serves numerous flights from major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, and Kunming. You can fly to one of these cities first and then connect to a flight to Lhasa.

In addition to domestic routes, Lhasa Gonggar International Airport launched the Lhasa-Chongqing-Singapore international route in late 2024, allowing travelers from Singapore to reach Lhasa with a stopover in Chongqing.

By Train: Tibet is connected to major Chinese cities by the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the world's highest railway. The primary departure cities for trains to Tibet include Beijing, Shanghai, Xining, Xi'an, Chengdu, and Chongqing.

To Travel from Nepal to Tibet: Overland or Air

By Overland: You can cross the China-Nepal border at the Gyirong Port. This journey, which takes about 7 to 8 hours, starts in Kathmandu and follows the scenic China-Nepal Friendship Highway.

By Air: You can take a flight provided by Himalayan Airlines from Kathmandu to Lhasa, Nepal three times a week.

8. Recommended Time to Travel to Tibet

The recommended time to travel to Tibet is from April to October each year.

The spring and autumn seasons have clear weather, which is suitable for outdoor activities. The summer is not hot, and the oxygen content is high, which is friendly to altitude sickness. The rain comes and goes quickly. Check Best Time to Visit Tibet ->>
