Tibet Biking: 3 Scenic Cycling Routes (Latest Guide)

Written by Senior Expert Roxy |Updated: 2025-02-14

Last spring, I took a Tibet biking trip. Unexpectedly, cycling on the roof of the world gave me memories that other travels couldn't replace. Even today, I can still recall the magnificent natural scenery, the spiritual satisfaction of challenging myself, and the unique Tibetan culture. It was definitely one of the most special trips in my life.

Along the way, I encountered red and white temples, jewel-like lakes, snow-capped mountains, and friendly locals. Starting from an altitude of more than 3,000 meters and cycling to more than 5,200 meters, I met cyclists aged 18 to 60 along the way.

If you also have the idea of Tibet cycling, then I am very honored that my personal experience can help you!

This Tibet Cycling guide, based on the latest Tibet (Xizang) biking information, includes documentation, top 3 cycling routes and travel tips including documentation, best time to cycle to Tibet, physical demand, etc. I hope you have a wonderful Tibet biking trip!

The Lhasa to Everest Base Camp (EBC) cycling route is a Tibetan classic, drawing cyclists from around the globe. So I tried this cycle route first.

Actually, this Tibet trail MTB from Lhasa to EBC is a true test of body and spirit.

Riding a bicycle from Lhasa to EBC, on a clear day, you will enjoy the pearl of southern Tibet (Xizang), Yamdrok Lake, the Karola Glacier with glaciers extending from the top of the mountain to the mountainside, and the Pelkor Monastery which integrates the essence of Tibetan Buddhism.

Then prepare to conquer multiple passes soaring above 5,000 meters (the main challenge), including the renowned Gyawu La Pass.

From this vantage point, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of four majestic 8,000-meter giants - Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu - a humbling reminder of nature's power.

The route to Everest Base Camp is mostly paved, but expect rough gravel and dirt sections closer to the end, increasing the difficulty of the ride.

Reaching EBC, you'll be rewarded with an unparalleled view of Mount Everest, standing tall and proud. The sense of accomplishment from your arduous journey will be immense, making all the effort worthwhile.

Temples, lakes, snow-capped mountains - this route has it all! It's an incredibly beautiful journey, and I can't recommend it enough.

The Lhasa to Namtso Lake cycling route, though shorter and less intensely demanding than the Everest biking, is no less a trial of strength and spirit. If you're interested in visiting a sacred lake but don't want to cycle for too long, I would recommend this route.
