Day 1 Arrive in Colombo, Sri Lanka | Airport Pick-up, Transfer to Kitulgala

Welcome to Sri Lanka, the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”! When you arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport, you will get your first taste of warm Sri Lankan hospitality. Our chauffeur-guide will welcome you at the airport and then escort you to Kitulgala, the perfect place to start your wildlife adventure (Approximately 3 hrs ride).

Kitulgala is a small town in the west of Sri Lanka, known as a paradise for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike. Set within an incredible wet zone rain forest, you might recognize this lush region as the filming location of David Lean’s 1957 epic, "Bridge on the River Kwai." The area's many nature trails and forests are ideal for bird watching, and rocky gorges and rushing rivers make it a prime spot for canyoneering and world-class whitewater rafting.

Arrival Ideas:

Flight to Colombo: Travelers can reach Sri Lanka via Bandaranaike International Airport, which has connections from major cities across Europe (London, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome), the Middle East (Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi), Asia (Kathmandu, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Beijing), and notably, direct connections from neighboring countries like India and the Maldives.

Airport Information: Bandaranaike International Airport (IATA: CMB), also known as Colombo International Airport, is Sri Lanka's primary international gateway but also a crucial hub in the region. Located in Katunayake, it's approximately 30 kilometers from Colombo, making the journey to the capital around 45 minutes to an hour by car. Negombo is even closer, about 10 kilometers away, offering a quick transfer for those looking to relax soon after landing.

Day 2 Kitulgala | Rainforest Trekking, White-Water Rafting

Your adventure begins with a tranquil dugout canoe ride across the broad Kelani River, easing you into the day with the gentle sounds of water. As you alight on the other side, the real journey on foot begins. Led by our guide, you'll trek into the heart of Kitulgala's rainforest, a haven for birdwatchers, with over 150 species of birds recorded in the area. The air, vibrant with the symphony of birdsong, guides you deeper into the forest. Keep your eyes peeled for the endemic Orange-billed babbler, the elusive Chestnut-backed owlet, and the striking Green-billed coucal among others. Navigate through trails surrounded by towering trees, exotic plants, and vibrant flowers. Encounter hidden waterfalls and gurgling streams and witness breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. Have a cool dip in a scenic flowing water stream.

The adventure persists with the thrill of white-water rafting down the Kelani River, covering 5 major rapids and 4 minor rapids. This activity is for anyone above the age of 10 years with safety gear and modern rafts, and a comprehensive safety briefing will be given by our white-water rafting instructors beforehand. The distance covered is around 5 km. The river and its surroundings will make you feel enchanted, with a memorable Experience during your White-Water Rafting Tour in Kitulagala.

Waterproof clothing and secure, comfortable footwear for trekking.
Swimwear and a change of clothes for the rafting experience.
Eco-friendly sunscreen, insect repellent, and a water bottle.
Camera or smartphone (waterproof protection advised) for capturing the breathtaking scenery.

Day 3 Kitulgala to Nuwara Eliya | Tea Plantation

After a leisurely breakfast, depart from the rainforest and head to Nuwara Eliya in the misty hills of central Sri Lanka. This drive will take approximately 2.5 - 3 hours. Along the way, you'll stop for photo opportunities at the roaring Devon and St. Clair Falls.

Nearing Nuwara Eliya, you'll find yourself enveloped in its cool, crisp climate - a stark contrast to the tropical warmth you've left behind. Standing at 6,200 feet above sea level, this cool climate makes it the perfect environment for tea cultivation, earning it the title of the Hill Country’s “tea capital,” a title that endures.

Along the way, you'll be escorted to a tea plantation, where the world’s best Ceylon Tea is produced. Wander through the verdant tea fields, observing the skilled tea pickers at work, selecting the finest leaves with precision. The visit typically includes a tour of the tea factory, where you'll learn about the fermentation, drying, cutting, and grading processes that transform green tea leaves into fragrant tea enjoyed worldwide. Don't forget to sip a cup of pure Ceylon tea in the factory and continue to "Little England" town.

Upon arriving in Nuwara Eliya, you'll sense a faint British country village ambiance with its colonial-era bungalows, Tudor-style hotels, well-kept hedgerows, and charming gardens. Once colonized by the British and often referred to as "Little England," Nuwara Eliya maintains its old-world charm.

Stay overnight in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 4 Nuwara Eliya | Horton Plains Hike & World’s End, Gregory Lake

After an early breakfast, set off on a hiking trip to Horton Plains National Park. Horton Plains belongs to the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka and is a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO. The plains are over 2000m high and are covered by wild grasslands and interspersed with patches of thick forest, rocky outcrops, waterfalls, and lakes. Horton Plains is the only national park in Sri Lanka where visitors are allowed to hike on their own. It provides some excellent trails for hikes amongst the shadows of its dewy foliage and misty landscapes. The surprising diversity of the landscape is matched by the wide variety of wildlife. If you're lucky, you may spot herds of sambar deer, leopards, or a wild boar during your hike. Birdwatchers will be richly rewarded. For those who prefer to exercise further, we recommend walking to the end of the world, a sheer cliff with a drop of about 4,000 feet. The precipice offers a fabulous view of the tea estates below. On a clear day, you can see out to the distant southern coastline.

Special Notes:
1. The circular trail to World's End is approximately 9 km and takes around 3 to 4 hours to complete. You can choose where to end based on your physical strength.
2. We will use a jeep or van due to the narrow roads toward Horton Plains National Park
3. It is recommended to start from Nuwara Eliya city around 6.00 - 6.30 am to make the most of the clear views and to avoid the heat of the day.
4. Today most probably we will have a packed breakfast.

Concluding your day at Gregory Lake allows for a gentle deceleration, with the serene waters and recreational activities offering a perfect backdrop for relaxation and reflection. Another option is to head to Victoria Park, where you can spend a few hours exploring the wide range of trees, flowers, and bird species across nearly 30 acres.

Upon arrival at Ella Railway Station, your chauffeur guide will pick you up. Your first visit will be the Nine Arch Bridge in Ella. This architectural marvel, covering 91 meters at a height of 2m, is constructed entirely from bricks, rocks, and cement, without the use of steel. It stands in the midst of lush jungles and tea fields. Passengers eagerly await the train's approach to this bridge, cameras at the ready. Next, you'll take a short drive to the majestic Ravana Falls, one of the widest falls in Sri Lanka.

After some time to rest, you can soar across the luscious green estates of Ella with an adrenaline-pumping excursion to the Flying Ravana Adventure Park. This two-wire zipline stretches for more than 1,500 feet (457 m) and slides at a maximum speed of 50 mph (80 kph) while you enjoy a bird's eye view over some of the Hill Country's most breathtaking scenery.

Important Travel Tips for Visiting Sri Lanka

Visa and Entry Requirements:

Before your trip, it is important to check the visa requirements for Sri Lanka and ensure that you have all the necessary documents.

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka:

For the West and South Coasts and Hill Country: The ideal time to visit these areas is from December to March. During these months, the weather is dry and sunny, making it perfect for exploring the beaches and the central highlands.
For the East Coast: The best months to visit are from April to September. This period avoids the Yala monsoon, which affects the southwest part of the island and brings rain primarily from May to August.

Road Condition in Sri Lanka:

Generally, the roads between the tourist cities are well-developed and maintained, offering a smooth driving experience. These areas have better-maintained roads and traffic management systems, though traffic congestion can be a significant issue, especially during rush hours. In more rural and remote areas, road conditions can deteriorate. Roads might be narrower, less maintained, and sometimes unpaved. In the hill country, roads can be winding and steep. While the views can be stunning, driving in these areas requires caution, especially in adverse weather conditions.

Local Customs in Sri Lanka:

1.Religious Respect: Sri Lanka is home to many religious traditions, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. It's important to dress modestly and remove shoes when entering temples and other religious sites. Covering shoulders and legs is generally expected. Observing and respecting religious rituals and festivals is appreciated.

2.Greetings: The traditional greeting in Sri Lanka is the "Ayubowan," which means "may you have a long life." It is usually accompanied by a slight bow and hands placed together in a prayer-like gesture. While handshakes are also common, especially in formal settings, it's best to wait for the other person to offer their hand first.

3. Hospitality: Sri Lankans are known for their hospitality. It's common to be offered tea or a meal when visiting someone's home. It is polite to accept at least a small amount of what is offered, as refusing can sometimes be considered impolite.

4. Dining Etiquette: When eating, especially in a home or traditional setting, it's customary to use your right hand rather than utensils. This applies particularly to local dishes such as rice and curry. Washing hands before and after meals is also a common practice.

5. Dress Code: Dressing conservatively is advised, particularly when outside urban centers. Women should avoid wearing revealing clothing, and both men and women should consider covering legs and shoulders, especially when visiting religious sites.

6. Photography: Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, particularly in rural areas. This is also important at religious sites, where photography might be restricted or considered disrespectful in certain areas.

Our Family Journey in Sri Lanka with Asia Odyssey Travel

Oh, we just got back from the 10-day Sri Lanka tour with Asia Odyssey Travel and it was fantastic! As a mom, I really appreciated how they planned everything so we could enjoy both the fun and educational aspects without any hassle. The kids loved the elephant safari and I was amazed by the beautiful tea gardens we visited. The accommodations were so family-friendly, making bedtime routines a breeze. Honestly, Asia Odyssey thought of everything, making our family trip both relaxing and memorable. Highly recommend it for any family looking for adventure!

A Blissful Honeymoon Journey with Asia Odyssey Travel

As newlyweds embarking on our much-awaited honeymoon, we entrusted our dreams to Asia Odyssey Travel, and they certainly didn't disappoint. Over the course of 10 enchanting days, we were swept away on a journey that surpassed all our expectations, creating memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Highlights of the trip include visiting the ancient city of Kandy and climbing Sigiriya Rock, both of which are unique and impressive experiences. The sacred Buddhist sites in Kandy and the majestic views from Sigiriya Rock perfectly blend culture with nature. Additionally, the honeymoon package includes leisure time on private beaches, seamlessly incorporating elements of romance and relaxation.

The choice of hotels is very elegant, especially the resorts by the sea, which provide an intimate and private setting. The cuisine is another highlight, featuring authentic Sri Lankan dishes as well as options suited for international palates.
