Day 2 Moscow Tour | Red Square, the Kremlin, the Metro

After breakfast at your hotel, your guide and driver will escort you on a full-day classic Moscow tour. The main experience for today’s itinerary: (1) visit the most iconic landmarks and architectures in Moscow; (2) know its rich history (Orthodox Christian traditions, the Tsardom, the Romanov dynasty, and Soviet ideology).

Your first stop will be Red Square, the heart of Moscow and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a leisurely walk and admire its architectural wonders. You will see St. Basil’s Cathedral (built in 1555-1561), famous for its colorful onion-shaped domes. Don’t miss the opportunity to take panoramic shots with the cathedral as your backdrop. As you pass the GUM Department Store (built in 1893), take a moment to appreciate this luxurious shopping mall, renowned for its elegant glass ceilings and historical architecture.

Standing on Red Square, listen to your guide’s detailed explanation, and you will gain a better understanding of Russia’s history, spanning from the era of medieval Tsars to the Soviet Union and modern Russia. Red Square remains a venue for major national celebrations, such as the Victory Day Parade (May 9) and various cultural festivals. Nearby, you’ll also find Lenin's Mausoleum (viewed from the outside), built in 1924. This solemn structure houses the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union, and stands as a significant historical landmark.

If time permits, you will have a chance to view the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After that, you will move to the Kremlin, the political and historical center of Russia. It is a fortified complex of palaces, cathedrals, museums, and government buildings. You will visit Cathedral Square (Sobornaya Square) and explore its magnificent cathedrals, such as the Assumption Cathedral and Archangel Cathedral, which house the tombs of Russian tsars. Witness the grandeur of the Tsar Cannon and Tsar Bell, and stroll through the Kremlin grounds while your guide explains its fascinating history.

(Optional experience, additional fee required: Visit the Armory Chamber, a treasure trove of Russian artifacts, including royal regalia, Fabergé eggs, and historic weaponry. Advance booking may be required.)

After that, you will head to one of the famous metro stations to marvel at the most beautiful parts of the Moscow Metro, often referred to as an underground museum. Stations like Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, and Ploshchad Revolyutsii are adorned with chandeliers, mosaics, marble columns, and Soviet-era artwork. Learn about the history and design of this iconic transportation system, which reflects the artistic and political aspirations of its time.

After the tour, you will be escorted back to your hotel.

Advice from Asia Odyssey Travel for In-depth Discovery of the Day:

  • Before visiting the Kremlin, stop at Alexander Garden. The garden offers stunning views of the Kremlin walls, towers, and flowerbeds, making it an excellent spot for photography.
  • If you want to visit Basil’s Cathedral, it needs extra pay. The cathedral’s interior is a maze of winding staircases and small passageways that connect the chapels. The walls are decorated with intricate frescoes, floral patterns, and religious icons from the 16th and 17th centuries. The central chapel, dedicated to the Intercession of the Virgin Mary, houses stunning religious artwork and is the spiritual heart of the cathedral.

Important Travel Tips for Visiting Russia

1. Obtain a Tourist Visa

Most travelers need a tourist visa to visit Russia. Start the visa application process at least 4–6 weeks before your trip.

2. Best Time to Visit Russia

Russia is a vast country with varied climates, so the best time to visit depends on what you’d like to experience.

Summer (June–August)

Warm weather and long daylight hours in summer (especially in St. Petersburg, thanks to the White Nights phenomenon) make it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Explore Moscow and Saint Petersburg with temperatures ranging from 20–30°C (68–86°F). Tips: Book hotels and train tickets early, as summer is peak season.

Winter (November–March)

Experience Russia’s enchanting snow-covered landscapes, vibrant Christmas markets, and festive winter celebrations. Enjoy skiing, ice skating, or exploring iconic spots like Moscow’s Red Square blanketed in snow. Temperatures range from -10°C to -30°C (14°F to -22°F), depending on the region. Though daylight is shorter, streets glow with beautifully lit decorations, creating a magical atmosphere.

3. What to Pack for Each Season
Summer (June–August)
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing (shorts, t-shirts, dresses).
  • Comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing.
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat for sunny days.
  • A light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.
Winter (November–March)
  • A thick winter coat or parka with a hood.
  • Insulated boots with good grip for walking on ice and snow.
  • Thermal layers (shirts, leggings, socks).
  • Gloves, a warm hat, and a scarf.
  • Moisturizer and lip balm to protect your skin from the cold.
Spring (April–May) and Autumn (September–October)
  • Layered clothing to adapt to changing temperatures.
  • A medium-weight jacket or coat.
  • Comfortable shoes for walking.
  • An umbrella or raincoat for unpredictable weather.
4. High-Speed Train Experience

Sapsan Train: The Sapsan high-speed train connects Moscow and Saint Petersburg, offering a fast, comfortable, and scenic journey. Travel Time: About 3 hours 30 minutes.

5. Book Tickets in Advance

Popular landmarks like the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and the Kremlin in Moscow often have long lines and limited availability. Pre-book tickets or guided tours to skip the lines and secure your spot.

Trains

High-speed trains like Sapsan and long-distance trains (e.g., Trans-Siberian Railway) sell out quickly during peak travel seasons. Reserve your train tickets early, especially for summer and major holidays.

6. Try Russian Cuisine

Russia offers a delicious and hearty culinary experience. Don’t miss these iconic dishes:

Must-tries include borscht (beet soup), pelmeni (meat dumplings), blini (thin pancakes), beef stroganoff, and shashlik (grilled meat skewers). Don’t miss pirozhki (stuffed pastries), kvass (fermented drink), and desserts like medovik (honey cake) or syrniki (cheese pancakes).

7. Russian Currency: Rubles (RUB)

The official currency in Russia is the Russian Ruble (RUB). Coins: Kopeks (100 kopeks = 1 ruble).

Using Cash

Cash is widely used in smaller shops, markets, and rural areas. Larger cities accept credit cards in most restaurants, hotels, and stores.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are like two sides of the same coin! Moscow impressed me with its energy and iconic landmarks like St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum. Saint Petersburg, however, was more romantic, with its beautiful canals and the grandeur of the Winter Palace. The train ride between the cities was smooth and added to the adventure. Both cities were captivating in their own way, and the combination made for a perfect Russian experience!
