Dating back over 1,200 years to the Tang Dynasty, Baiheliang was a natural stone ridge carved with inscriptions and fish sculptures that served as a water level gauge for the Yangtze River. The ridge recorded changes in water levels, droughts, and floods, making it the world’s oldest hydrological station. Over 30 inscriptions and 100 fish carvings documenting water levels and river culture.
The Underwater Museum
With the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, Baiheliang was submerged beneath the river. To preserve its cultural and historical significance, an underwater museum was created using advanced engineering. Visitors descend into a specially designed underwater tunnel equipped with high-tech windows, allowing them to view the ancient carvings and inscriptions safely.
17. 816 Underground Nuclear Project, Fuling
Hidden in the mountains of Fuling District, Chongqing, the 816 Underground Nuclear Project (816地下核工程) is one of the most fascinating and mysterious sites in China. Built during the Cold War in 1966, this massive underground bunker was designed to house China's first nuclear reactor. The project was halted in 1984 before it became operational.
