As a travel consultant at Asia Odyssey Travel, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have met Giovanni and Maria, a charming Italian couple whose silver hair glowed with both wisdom and the enthusiasm of true explorers. Their story is one of curiosity, connection, and the beauty of traveling at any age.

Datong Yungang Grottoes

First Contact: Bridging Cultures, One Message at a Time

It all began with a brief, heartfelt email from Milan. Giovanni's English was simple but warm: "We want to visit China. We love your ancient culture, architecture, and stories. We travel slow, want to see deep, and enjoy every moment." Maria, his wife, only spoke Italian, but always ended each email with a cheerful "Grazie mille!"—a small signature of her gratitude.

Planning their trip was a journey in itself. Every detail required careful translation and double-checking. Maria was eager to see a real Peking Opera performance in Beijing; Giovanni worried about food in the China. We discussed the pace, hotels, guides, and even the smallest comforts - from access to espresso to evening strolls in old towns.

After two weeks of intensive communication - translating, clarifying, adjusting - we finalized 31-day itinerary that would take them from the imperial grandeur of Beijing, through the Buddhist art of Datong, the walled towns of Pingyao and Xi’an, the mystical peaks of Zhangjiajie, the gentle rivers of Guilin, and the colorful traditions of Yunnan, all the way to modern Shanghai before returning to Milan.

Arrival in China: Wonder in Their Eyes

Their arrival in Beijing was filled with anticipation. I arranged for a guide who spoke Italian to greet them at the airport. Maria, despite a long flight, was instantly energized, snapping photos of the blue Beijing sky and whispering, "Che bello!" ("How beautiful!")

Their first day at the Forbidden City was magical. Maria gazed in awe at the golden roofs, tracing the intricate carvings with her fingers. Giovanni listened intently to the guide's stories of emperors and dynasties. That evening, Maria sent me a photo of the two of them standing proudly in Tiananmen Square, with the caption: "China is so vast, its history so deep!"

Onward they traveled by high-speed train to Datong, where they stood in silent reverence before the towering Buddha statues of Yungang Grottoes. "These sculptures remind me of the churches in Italy," Giovanni said in a voice note, "but the faces here are gentler, more mysterious."

In Xi'an, Maria was overwhelmed at the sight of the Terracotta Army, exclaiming with delight, "Impressionante!" ("So impressive!")

They wandered through ancient city alleys, sampling local delicacies. Giovanni fell in love with Xi'an's savory "roujiamo" (Chinese burgers) and half-jokingly asked if he could pack some for Milan. Maria's favorite moment was drifting down the Li River in Guilin, standing at the boat's prow, her hair tousled by the wind as karst peaks unfolded before her like a painted scroll.

Service from the Heart: Navigating Bumps Along the Way

No journey is perfect. In Luoyang, there was a hiccup - there was no Italian-speaking guide available, only an English-speaking one, which made communication difficult. Giovanni messaged me, sounding worried. I spoke with the local guide and asked him to record his explanations in advance, so we could translate them from English to Italian using an app. This made communication much smoother.

Maria later sent a photo of herself with the guide at the Longmen Grottoes, smiling with relief. She even recorded a "Thank you!" audio message in her charming Italian accent - a small gesture that meant the world to me.

In Yunnan, their joy only grew. Whether strolling by Erhai Lake in Dali or sipping yak butter tea in a Tibetan home in Shangri-La, they marveled at the diversity of China's cultures. Maria sent daily photos, often with short Italian captions. Each night, they shared the day's highlights with their children and grandchildren back in Italy, their family group chat now full of Chinese landscapes and happy faces.

A Journey's End, But Not Goodbye

The thirty days seemed to pass in the blink of an eye. On their final night in Shanghai, Giovanni and Maria stood arm in arm on the Bund, gazing out at the neon-lit skyline. Maria sent me a photo - her head resting on Giovanni's shoulder, the Oriental Pearl Tower glittering in the background. Her message read: "Grazie, my friend. La Cina è meravigliosa." ("Thank you, my friend. China is marvelous.")

Back in Italy, Maria continued to share her life with me - photos of the blue Mediterranean, golden sunsets, and family gatherings by the sea. She spoke warmly of her Chinese adventure to friends and neighbors, and soon I began receiving inquiries from other Italian travelers, all eager to follow in her footsteps.

This New Year, Giovanni and Maria wrote to me again. Their next dream? To explore China's Silk Road for another month, and—of course—under my guidance. "With you, we feel at ease," Giovanni wrote.

The Meaning of My Work As a Travel Consultant

As a travel consultant, nothing is more rewarding than this kind of trust and connection. It's not just about designing itineraries or booking hotels. It's about building bridges - between languages, cultures, and hearts. It's about making sure every traveler, no matter their age or background, feels seen, heard, and cared for.

Thanks to Giovanni and Maria, my work has become so much more than a job; it's a journey of friendship and meaning. Every sincere effort, every problem solved, every smile in a photograph - these are the memories that cross mountains and oceans, and stay with us forever.
