Last October, in 2024, I was tasked with leading an incredible 13-day journey across China for a group of 18 travelers from different countries. Guiding the tour through Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin, Chongqing, and Shanghai turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my career as a travel expert.

This was our China group tour experience. This was China small group tour, with some parts for the whole trip, like Beijing, if you have only 4 days in China, just take our Beijing group tour. However, this group I led would be the complete 13 days China group tour for 12 travelers. I would go to meet different hearts and listen to their story. Very amazing.

Xian Tour with AOT

Each city offers its own unique charm, and as a tour leader, I had the privilege of guiding my group through these incredible destinations while working closely with local travel operators. These operators are the backbone of our tours, providing local expertise and ensuring that every traveler gets the most authentic and enriching experience possible. In each city, we partnered with a local tour guide who knew the destination inside and out, allowing us to dive deep into the culture, history, and hidden gems of the region. This seamless collaboration not only enhances the travel experience but also reinforces Asia Odyssey Travel's commitment to delivering exceptional, locally-informed journeys.

One of the most memorable moments from my time as a tour leader was traveling with Phil, a spirited UK customer in his late 70s. Phil was unlike anyone I'd ever met - adventurous, outgoing, and full of life. A former professional dancer, he carried himself with a sense of grace and curiosity that was truly inspiring.

Great Hanfu Experience in Xian at Night

From the moment we met in Beijing, Phil's energy was infectious. He approached every destination with an open mind and a willingness to learn, whether we were exploring the ancient wonders of the Great Wall, marveling at the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an, or cruising along the serene Li River in Guilin.

Throughout the journey, Phil shared stories from his life, and his perspective left a lasting impact on me. One of the most valuable lessons he taught me was the importance of embracing life to the fullest, no matter your age. He reminded me that my decision to travel solo in my early 20s was one of the best choices I could have made. "Travel while you can," he said, "because it opens your mind, shapes your character, and gives you stories to cherish forever." His words resonated deeply with me, especially as I watched him navigate China with such enthusiasm and independence, even in his late 70s. Phil was living proof that age is just a number, and his adventurous spirit inspired everyone in the group.

Working with local operators added another layer of richness to the tour. In each city, our local guides brought the destinations to life with their deep knowledge and personal anecdotes.

In Beijing, our guide shared fascinating insights into the Forbidden City's history, while in Xi'an, we were treated to a local family's home-cooked meal, giving us a taste of authentic Shaanxi cuisine. In Guilin, our guide led us through the picturesque countryside, revealing hidden spots that only a local would know.

Beijing Forbidden City

Chongqing's vibrant food scene came alive thanks to our guide's recommendations, and in Shanghai, we explored the city's blend of tradition and modernity with ease. These experiences not only enriched the journey but also highlighted the importance of local expertise, something Asia Odyssey Travel takes great pride in providing.

Phil's adventurous spirit and the seamless collaboration with local operators made this tour unforgettable. It reminded me why I fell in love with travel in the first place - the people you meet, the lessons you learn, and the connections you make along the way. As a tour leader, I strive to create these meaningful experiences for every traveler, ensuring they leave with not just memories, but a deeper understanding of the world and themselves. This is what Asia Odyssey Travel is all about - crafting journeys that inspire, connect, and transform.

5 Essential Travel Tips for Visiting China

1. Get a VPN Before You Arrive

Many popular websites and apps, such as Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube, are blocked in China.

Download and install a VPN (Virtual Private Network) before arriving, as VPN websites are also blocked in China.

Popular VPNs that work in China include Shadow Rocket.

2. Buy a Travel SIM Card in Hong Kong for Unrestricted Internet

If you're transiting through Hong Kong, consider buying a travel SIM card there. Many Hong Kong SIM cards allow access to regular Western websites like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, even when used in mainland China.

Look for CSL, China Mobile Hong Kong, or Three HK travel SIMs, which offer data coverage in China without restrictions.

Alternatively, you can use an eSIM that supports unrestricted internet access in China. Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad are popular eSIM providers for travelers.

3. Go Cashless  Use Mobile Payment Apps

China is a nearly cashless society, and most places do not accept cash or foreign bank cards.

Download WeChat Pay (Weixin Pay) or Alipay, which are the most widely used payment apps.

4. Use Translation Apps and Learn Basic Phrases

Google Translate doesn't work in China unless you use a VPN, so download Baidu Translate or Microsoft Translator.

Learn basic Mandarin phrases such as "Hello" (你好 - Nǐ hǎo), "Thank you" (谢谢 - Xièxiè), and "How much?" (多少钱 - Duōshǎo qián?).

5. Download Essential Travel Apps

DiDi (China's version of Uber) for taxis.

Baidu Maps (instead of Google Maps, which is blocked).

Meituan (美团) or Ele.me (饿了么) - Popular food delivery apps in China, allowing you to order meals from local restaurants.
